Paintings and prints from the Renaissance era to the 20th century are part of The Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Department of Music and Visual Arts’ exhibition, Dürer to Picasso: 400 Years of European Prints from the Ackland Art Museum. The free event is 1 to 4 p.m., Oct. 24-Dec. 10 in the University Gallery in the K.E. White Center, 1862 Edgewood Dr.

As part of the event, which is open to the public, there will be a series of presentations and films on Fridays during the exhibit. Musical performances relative to the era of certain paintings are also planned. The event is part of a loaning tour throughout the state through the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

ECSU is the second stop on the loaning tour. European prints, etchings, and lithographs, “all direct from the hands of the artists,” will be on display, according to university faculty who have organized the event.

“A show of prints, not reprints, by some of the most famous artists … including Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt Van Rijn, William Blake, Edgar Degas and Pablo Picasso, will be right here in Elizabeth City and on ECSU’s campus,” said Jeffrey P. Whelan, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music and Visual Arts.

This is the second year ECSU has participated in the consortium. Last year’s exhibition, “Almost Now: Cuban Art, Cinema and Politics,” examined the central role that artists, filmmakers, and film audiences played in Cuban cultural and political discourse since the 1959 Cuban Revolution.

“We’re, again, excited to offer this experience to our students, the campus and the community,” Whelan said.

Local community groups and school art classes can make arrangements for a guided tour by sending a request to jpwhelan@ecsu.edu.
